Michelle Phan: YouTube to Lancôme

In Makeup Artists on March 17, 2010 by facesbyangie

Michelle Phan, the most popular makeup guru on YouTube, was recently picked up by Lancôme as the brand’s first-ever video makeup artist .  Her videos are pleasant to watch with her soothing voice, and carefully chosen background music.  Ms. Phan has uploaded a wide variety of videos from everyday looks, to costume party makeup, movie character-inspired faces, product reviews, and numerous “how to’s” on cleaning makeup brushes and DIY home facials…..go ahead and peruse through her YouTube channel.

Already planning for Halloween? (I am. I’m gonna be Kim Yuna….you better not steal my idea.)

Wanna add some pizazz to your traditional eyeliner?

And for those of us who are not as daring…

Michelle Phan is a current art student and a self taught makeup artist.   I enjoy her unique approach to makeup, inspired by art and artist’s techniques.   A couple years back,  she applied for a Lancôme makeup counter position and was denied…well, look her at her now!

If you love doing something, keep doing it and maybe someday you’ll get paid for doing something that you would do for free!

Jung Saem Mool: Hyori Look

In Makeup Artists on March 6, 2010 by facesbyangie

Here’s another makeup tutorial from my favorite makeup artist.  An absolutely gorgeous look…I love it!  I can’t wait to pick up some pink eye shadow(s) and Mac’s Angel lipstick and emulate this look! (I remember hearing somewhere that Mac’s Angel is a very popular, versatile color.)

G O R G E O U S. Loving the pink! Don’t shy away from color, makeup is way more fun that way!!

Kevyn Aucoin: Famous Celebrities of Yesteryear

In Makeup Artists on February 23, 2010 by facesbyangie

Beauty is about perception, not about make-up. I think the beginning of all beauty is knowing and liking oneself. You can’t put on make-up, or dress yourself, or do you hair with any sort of fun or joy if you’re doing it from a position of correction.

~Kevyn Aucoin [February 14, 1962 – May 7, 2002]

Kevyn Aucoin, a renown celebrity makeup artist, is famous for his work in transforming todays celebrities into the iconic faces of the past.  He was truly an artist in my book. My favorite is the Twiggy transformation.  Hmm…wonder who I’d request to look like for a day?

Gwyneth Paltrow as Faye Dunaway

Calista Flockhart as Audrey Hepburn

Hillary Swank as Raquel Welch

Julianne Moore as Twiggy!!

Liza Minelli as Marilyn Monroe

Winona Ryder as Elizabeth Taylor...pretty impressive.

Martha Stewart as Veronica Lake, WHOA.

Last but certainly not least, Gwenyth Paltrow once again, this time as JAMES DEAN!

ooh one more, Christy Turlington as Marisa it.

Jung Saem Mool: Blue Hawaii

In Makeup Artists on February 19, 2010 by facesbyangie

the thought of blue eye shadow (God forbid!) may remind you of…

mimi, from the drew carey show

it can however, be done beautifully and artfully as demonstrated by Jung Saem Mool:

  • love the way she applies blush, none of the big swiping motions that we’re familiar with (this makes the blush look like it’s coming from within the skin)
  • the model’s completed eyes remind me of a watercolor painting…just lovely!
  • she didn’t use any black/brown eyeliner!
  • her process (in all her tutorials): 1) concealer/foundation, 2) blush, 3) eyes, 4) eyebrows, 5) lips (usually people fill in the eyebrows much earlier on, and save blush for later)

this look is probably more appropriate for the summer.  ahh, summer…my favorite season!! another reason to look forward to it…

Jung Saem Mool: Kim Yuna inspired look

In Makeup Artists on February 15, 2010 by facesbyangie

good resources on applying makeup to asian faces are scarce.  and i’m sure i’m not the only one who has encountered a negative experience at a department store makeup counter…perhaps leaving the mall with eyes that look like you got punched in the face?

Jung Saem Mool is a gem,  the makeup artist to numerous Korean big-time celebs including Hyori, Boa, and Kim Tae Hee–some of Korea’s highest regarded celebrities!

in lieu of the 2010 Winter Olympics, here is a dramatic look inspired by figure skater Kim Yuna:

Ms. Jung Saem Mool might become my #1 mentor via the web.

peter philips is currently the global creative director for Chanel Makeup, which is described by Vogue as the most coveted job in cosmetics. this is awesome…transferring 2d designs onto the face. how fun would that be?

this inspires me to sketch out my ideas and get ahold of that glorious PAINT!

also! he is the designer behind Chanel’s temporary tattoos, officially called Les Trompe L’Oeil de CHANEL Temporary Skin Art.

a dear friend of mine had brought my attention to these beautiful temporary tattoos last month and we both agreed they were lovely, but i had no idea who peter philips was at the time!
